Terrible comparison, soccer isn't a fad, it's always been incredibly huge worldwide and will always be. Just because it's not big in America, doesn't mean it isn't a good sport, our most popular sport is wimp version of rugby and the our pastime is a game a longer, more boring game with 1/10 of the athletes as a game like soccer.
I wouldn't say that at all. One reason soccer hasnt been better in in the US is because our best athletes play football, basketball and baseball. If you took kids that were the best athletes in those sports and had them concentrating on soccer, they would be on the national team instaed of many that are there now. Its just that their training/conditioning has been different. A few of the soccer players could possibly play baseball, but probably not because if they could, that is more than likely where they would be because the money is there compared to soccer in the US. Its just a difference in training/conditioning. Not in atheletic ability.
"Call me crazy, but I want to buy the Dallas Cowboys end zone and have the star right at the foot of my bed. That way when I score, I can spike the ball right on the star!" -Woody Paige, Around the Horn 10.9.08
I wouldn't compare it to watching paint drying, more like watching grass grow.

Conditioning is part of being a true athlete, a huge part. The fact still remains no matter what the reason is, whether the sport doesn't call for it, that they chose the other sport etc...doesn't matter to me. It comes down to us being lazy, look what happened to us in the WBC, the Olympics when we took the bronze home a few years ago...that should never, ever happen. We have more talent, that's a given, yet we get our asses handed to us in the WBC and a few years ago in basketball. Why? Because we have spoiled athletes, that show lesser pride, lesser discipline etc. Soccer is just too simple for it to catch on here in America, we make ours as complex as possible for some reason, if it doesn't have a thousand different penalties...it's a sissy sport according to us.

Basketball is a sport filled with gang bangers. Notice I didn't say former gang bangers. They get paid way too much money, and talk about sissies. How many of them really play hurt anymore?
Baseball is full of prima donnas. "I make $15,000 a game, and I only work eight months out of the year, but I need to play a limited schedule so I can hob-knob with my TV star girlfriend." And again, how many of those sissies play hurt?
Football. A watered down version of Rugby is exactly right. Big strong guys, I agree. They can hit you and hurt you, no doubt. Again, look at how many of them are unwilling to play hurt. Of all the sports popular int he US, I think football requires the most conditioning and strength, but it still isn't as exciting to me as watching a golf game. Nine times out of ten you know who is going to win before the game ever starts.
Sports in the US suck. The players suck, the fans suck, the ticket prices suck, the venues suck, and the TV coverage surrounding all the sports suck. I am 45 years old, but if somebody told me they were going to pay me $1 million to play football I would find a way to make it there and play. These spoiled kids have no heart, no drive, all they care about is the $. There are a few exceptions, but for the most part they aren't worth the dynamite it would take to blow their brains out, and that wouldn't be much dynamite.
Want me to be interested in pro sports again? Limit the salaries to $1 million a year. Pay bonuses for performance. Lower ticket prices so the average family of four can go to a MLB game for less than $100. When a player does drugs, breaks the law, etc... can their sorry A$$. Make them cover up their gang tats, and if they flash gang signs they are canned. If they don't play because they are hurt, pay them "sick pay" and make it $1000 a week. I guarantee they will get better quicker.
